Prof. Jonathan Leor
Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine
Jonathan Leor, M.D. is a physician-scientist, Professor of Cardiology at Tel-Aviv University, and the Director of the Neufeld and Tamman Cardiovascular Research Institutes at Tel-Aviv University and the Sheba Medical Center, Tel-Hashomer, Israel.
Leor obtained his M.D. from Tel Aviv University (1985). He did his internal medicine and cardiology residency at the Sheba Medical Center (1986-92) and did a research fellowship at the University of Southern California (1993-5). He opened his first lab during his work as the director of the intensive cardiac care unit and vice chairman of the Cardiology Department Soroka Medical Center and Ben-Gurion University (1995-2000
Leor is a world-renowned leader in the development of novel cardiovascular regenerative therapies. His research covered gene therapy, cell therapy, tissue engineering, injectable biomaterials, nanomedicine, cell reprogramming, and the role of heart macrophages and stromal cells in heart repair. He is a co-inventor of breakthrough injectable biomaterial to treat heart attacks. The biomaterial was licensed by a major US drug company. Leor is the author and co-author of more than 190 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in prestigious journals such as Circulation, The New England Journal of Medicine, PNAS, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and the European Heart Journal.
Today, Leor’s research focuses on heart repair and reverse cardio-oncology. He is currently investigating the role of cardiac extracellular vesicles in the onset and progression of various diseases.
